ENGINEERING MARVELS
Advanced Disposal’s landfills are impressive engineering structures that offer proven
protection to the natural environment while providing a vital service to governments,
businesses and residents. They are managed and operated meticulously, providing a
safe and cost-effective disposal option for community waste.
Advanced Disposal engineers and designs its facilities with the latest technology
in the waste industry. We incorporate state-of-the-art systems that include:
Bottom Liner Systems, Leachate Collection Systems and Gas Collection Systems
for our municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills.
ENERGY CONSERVERS
Converting landfill gas to energy is how mature landfills deal with the issue of
gases created within their facilities. It is an effective means of recycling and
reusing a valuable resource. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has endorsed landfill gas as an environmentally friendly energy resource
that reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. Advanced Disposal
is an active participant in landfill gas to energy projects at our MSW landfills and
continues to look for smart solutions for solving community needs.
As landfill cells are completed, methane gas, a byproduct of any decomposing
material, is pumped out of the landfill through a system of wells and pipelines
into a separate on-site treatment facility.
This landfill gas treatment facility captures the landfill gas (containing
approximately 50% methane) and destroys the landfill gas by combusting it in
the flare or diverting it to an electricity generator and thus preventing it from
escaping into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. The fact that we are doing
this on a voluntary basis means we are generating greenhouse gas reduction
credits known as Climate Reserve Tons (CRT’s), which are registered under the
Climate Action Reserve and sold to consumers or utilities.
Currently, Advanced Disposal has three MSW landfill facilities that are in some
stage of the process to use the methane as fuel for generator systems to produce
electricity or upgrade the methane to pipeline quality equivalent to natural gas
for use as a green renewable fuel.
Project Summary: Eagle Point Landfill
A collection system was installed at Eagle Point Landfill and began selling CO2
Credits in October 2009. In late 2011, we began construction of a larger electrical
generation facility. It will initially have four electrical generating units producing
5.6 Megawatts of electricity, enough to power 3,400 homes. Over time, we plan to
have this facility double in size and output.
Project Summary: Wolf Creek Landfill
A collection system was installed at Wolf Creek Landfill and began selling CO2
Credits in January 2010. The
energy generation portion of
the project began operating
in September 2011. We are
now taking landfill gas that
was being destroyed in
the flare and utilizing it to
produce 2.8 Megawatts of
electricity, enough to power
1,700 homes.
Project Summary: Stone’s Throw Landfill
A landfill gas collection system was installed at Stone’s Throw Landfill in May
2010 and began selling CO2 Credits.
