Charlie Appleby

Charlie Appleby — Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Charlie Appleby is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Disposal.  He served as Director, President and Chief Financial Officer of Advanced Disposal since its inception, before becoming Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Disposal in August 2006.  Charlie also served as President of CAVCO, a private investment company, where he was responsible for the securities portfolio, detailed analysis and review of potential investment opportunities and administration operations from 1996 through June 2004. Prior to his service with CAVCO, Charlie was a founding member of Grenadier, Appleby, Collins & Company, a Jacksonville, Florida accounting firm, formed in 1984, providing services with an emphasis on taxation matters, mergers and acquisitions, valuations and foreign transactions. Previously, Charlie held positions with various national accounting firms, the last of which was Coopers & Lybrand where he held the position of Tax Manager. He received Masters and Bachelors degrees in Business Administration from Stetson University in 1977, and a Bachelors degree in Political Science from University of Florida in 1970. Charlie is a certified public accountant in Florida. He is also a retired Colonel, Florida Army National Guard, selected for promotion to Brigadier General. He retired on August 1, 2001, after 31 years of service in the U.S. Armed forces. During this period, he received numerous decorations and achievements, including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, the Florida Cross, Senior Parachutist, Ranger and Pathfinder. 


Walter Hall, Jr. — Chief Operating Officer, Director

Wally Hall is the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Advanced Disposal.  He joined Advanced Disposal at its inception, and prior to joining Advanced Disposal, he served as the Jacksonville Area President of Southland Waste Systems, a subsidiary of Republic Services, from 1998 to 2000.  From 1996 to 1998, he served as District Manager for Southland in Middle, Georgia.  Before his employment with Southland, he worked for Browning Ferris Industries for approximately seven years, holding positions as Operations Manager, Birmingham, Alabama, Assistant Regional Operations Manager, Atlanta, Georgia, District Manager of North Atlanta and District Manager, Jacksonville, Florida. Wally’s responsibilities in these positions included, among other things, oversight of sales and marketing, fleet maintenance and operations, and employee training and development. He received a Bachelors Degree in Education in 1979 and a Bachelors Degree in English and History in 1980 from Mississippi College.

 

 

Richard Burke — President, Director

Richard Burke is President and Director Advanced Disposal.  Since 2007, he has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Veolia ES Solid Waste, Inc.  Richard began his employment with Veolia in 1999 as Area Manager for the Southeast Wisconsin area and served as Regional Vice President for the Eastern and Southern markets until he was appointed Chief Executive Officer.  Prior to joining Veolia, he spent 12 years with Waste Management in a variety of leadership positions.  

 


Steven Carn — Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer, Director

Steve Carn is the Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer, and Director of Advanced Disposal.  He joined Advanced Disposal in April 2001 and served as Chief Accounting Officer until August 2006 and currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of Advanced Disposal.  Prior to joining the Advanced Disposal, Steve served for three years as Chief Financial Officer of Town Star Food Stores, LLC, a convenience store business with over $30 million in annual revenues. Prior to his service with Town Star, he served as Senior Consultant with CFO Services, Inc., a company engaged primarily in providing temporary chief financial officer services to emerging companies in the Jacksonville, Florida area. He began his career as an accountant with Ernst & Young in 1987. Steve graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1987 and is a certified public accountant in Ohio.

 

Mary O’Brien — Chief Marketing Officer

Mary O’Brien is the Chief Marketing Officer of Advanced Disposal.  She has served as the Chief Marketing Officer of Advanced Disposal since February 2001, overseeing all marketing and communication efforts of Advanced Disposal and its subsidiaries.  Mary’s responsibilities include branding, municipal market development, advertising, government relations and public relations. In addition, her duties include incorporating new market research development and entry strategy, database management, state and local permitting political efforts, and industry networking.  Mary received her Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Marketing and a Minor in English from James Madison University.

 

Matthew Gunnelson - Chief Accounting Officer, Assistant Treasurer

Matthew Gunnelson is Chief Accounting Officer and Assistant Treasurer of Advanced Disposal.  He has served as Corporate Controller and Assistant Secretary of Veolia ES Solid Waste, Inc. since 2005.  Prior to joining Veolia, Matthew served as Division Controller for Tecumseh Products - Engine and Transmission Group from 1999 through April 2005.  Prior to his service with Tecumseh, Matthew held various finance positions with Giddings & Lewis, Inc.  He began his career as an auditor with Ernst & Young in 1986.  Matthew is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in accounting and finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

 

Scott Friedlander — Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary

Scott Friedlander is Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Advanced Disposal.  He has served as the General Counsel for Interstate Waste since October 2009.  Prior to joining Interstate Waste, Scott was the General Counsel to OneSource Facility Services, Inc., a company also in the service industry, which provided janitorial, landscaping and mechanical maintenance services nationwide.  Scott has prior waste industry experience having worked for Browning Ferris Industries as Divisional Vice President, Legal for the Southeastern Region. He worked as in-house counsel for a medical device manufacturer and high tech data communications manufacturer.  He has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia, with a concentration in International Business, and a Law Degree from the University of Miami.

Randall Arnold – Executive Vice President – Operations 

Randy Arnold joined Advanced Disposal in 2007 as a result of Advanced Disposal’s acquisition of Urrutia, Inc. (dba Arrow Disposal Service) where he served as Senior Vice President of Operations. Prior to that time he served in leadership roles throughout the southeast for Allied Waste Industries (dba Browning Ferris Industries) including interim SE Assistant Region Vice President, District Manager, and SE Area Operations Manager.  Randy’s experience includes tenure with Waste Management, Inc. performing duties as a Division President and the Mid- South Region’s Director of Operations. He began his career in the solid waste industry in 1991 following his graduation from the University of Alabama’s School Of Commerce and Business Administration with a B.S. in Management.

Gerald Allen

Gerald Allen, Jr. — Vice President — Landfills

Gerald Allen joined Advanced Disposal in August 2001 and serves as the Vice President of the Company’s landfill operations.  He has been in the environmental services business since 1980. Gerald has held positions in the environmental compliance and landfill operations with companies such as Republic Services Group, Waste Management of Mississippi, Inc. and Chemical Waste Management, Inc.


 

Charlie Gray – Regional Vice President – South

Charlie Gray joined Advanced Disposal in March 2001 and serves as Regional Vice President. Prior to joining the Company, he was in the environmental services business for more than eight years and held managerial positions in both Georgia and Florida with Republic Services Group and Browning Ferris Industries. Charlie received a Master of Science degree in School Administration in 1985 from Nicholls State University and Bachelors of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1983 from the University of Arkansas - Monticello.

 

David Lavender – Regional Vice President – East

Dave Lavender joined Advanced Disposal in October 2004 and serves as Regional Vice President. Prior to joining the Company, he was in the environmental services business for more than nine years and has held managerial positions in both Georgia and Florida with Waste Management and Browning Ferris Industries. Dave received his Bachelors in Business Administration in 1992 from the Georgia Southern University.


 

Jay Rooney – Regional Vice President – Central

Jay Rooney is Regional Vice President and has more than 38 years of industry experience.  He served as Regional Vice President of Veolia ES Solid Waste, Inc. overseeing Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin operations. Prior to his time with Veolia, Jay was Regional Vice President for Allied Waste Industries and Group President for Waste Management. Jay served three years in the U.S. Army and holds a Bachelors Degree in History from St. Bernard College.

 

 

Poncho James

Eric “Poncho” James — Vice President — Recycling

Poncho James joined Advanced Disposal in 2009 when the company he founded, Sumrall Recycling Services, was acquired by Advanced Disposal. He grew Sumrall Recycling to $14 million in annual revenues and operated five Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) in the Southeast before joining Advanced Disposal. As Vice President – Recycling, Poncho maintains executive oversight for all strategic recycling projects for the company.


 

Tammy Wilson - Vice President - Sales

Tammy Wilson joined Advanced Disposal in 2001 and currently serves as Vice President – Sales and has more than 21 years of industry experience working in both operations and sales roles. Prior to joining the company, Tammy worked as Major Account Manager for Southland Environmental Services.  In 2012, she was recognized in Waste & Recycling News as a Rosie Award Winner for her leadership, inspiration, creativity and work ethic.  She has held various leadership positions in the solid waste and recycling industry.

 

Marti Dickman - Vice President - Risk Management

Marti Dickman – Vice President – Risk Management Marti Dickman joined Advanced Disposal in 2006 and serves as Vice President – Risk Management and has more than 22 years of risk management experience. Prior to joining the company, she worked as Assistant Vice President at Hilb, Rogal, & Hobbs in Norfolk, Virginia and Risk Manager for Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. She holds a Bachelors of Computer Sciences from the University of Maryland. 


Glenn Guest – Vice President – Corporate Human Resources

Glenn Guest joined Advanced Disposal in 2006 and serves as Vice President – Corporate Human Resources and has more than 23 years of human resources experience.  Prior to joining the company, Glenn worked as Director, Corporate Human Resources for Arnold Transportation Services in Jacksonville, Florida.  He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Georgia and an Executive Master of Business Administration from Jacksonville University.      

  


Dan Cowher – Vice President - Fleet Maintenance

Dan Cowher currently serves as Vice President - Fleet Maintenance at Advanced Disposal. He has worked in the environmental services since the 1982 and most recently was Fleet Director at Veolia ES Solid Waste.  Prior to joining Veolia, Dan has held positions with ReNewable Resources Unlimited, Waste Management, Inc. and the U.S. Navy Seabees.  His experience includes Heavy Construction Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Fleet Maintenance Director and Purchasing Director. Dan is an avid outdoorsman, adventurist, and an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America in Merrimac, Massachusetts.

 

 

Bobby Greene – Corporate Director of Safety

Bobby Greene currently serves as Corporate Director of Safety at Advanced Disposal. Prior to joining Advanced Disposal, Bobby served in the same role at Interstate Waste. He was also Vice President and co-owner of Business Health Resources (BHR), where he developed and implemented solutions for reducing strain and sprain related injuries for clients in a wide variety of industries across the U.S.  Over his nearly 20 year career, Bobby has served in various safety and health management roles primarily in energy and manufacturing where he helped numerous facilities achieve and maintain the prestigious OSHA VPP Star certification. He is a certified safety professional (CSP), published author, and regular speaker in the safety and health field.  In 2007, Bobby was selected to attend the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA) Future Leaders Institute.  He currently serves as a member of Environmental Industry Association’s (EIA) Safety Committee.  Bobby received a BS and MS in Environmental Health and a Certificate in Environmental Ethics from the University of Georgia.  While at the University of Georgia he was also awarded the Olin Huff Award and earned a varsity letter as a member of the Georgia Bulldog football team.  Most recently Bobby has completed course work toward his MBA at Fordham University.
