Advanced Disposal Celebrates Official Opening of Turkey Trot Landfill
Government, Business Leaders, Partners and Neighbors Gather for Ribbon-Cutting CITRONELLE, Ala., (May 6, 2011) – Advanced Disposal, along with Washington and Mobile Counties, commemorated the opening of Turkey Trot Landfill on Thursday with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. The landfill, located at 2328 Mannish Ryan Rd., is the environmental services company’s 11th landfill.
“Our relationship with Advanced Disposal began back in 2006,” said Allen Bailey, chairman of Washington County Board of Commissioners. “Throughout the permitting, construction and now, operation of Turkey Trot Landfill, they have proven to be a stellar corporate citizen. We are proud to have them doing business in Washington County.”
Special guests were on hand to help Advanced Disposal’s employees, neighbors, customers and partners celebrate the event including: Bailey, Merceria Ludgood, president of Mobile County Commission, and Wallace Killcreas, chairman or Mobile County Solid Waste Disposal Authority.
The luncheon marked Advanced Disposal’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art disposal facilities in Alabama and the Gulf Coast region. Turkey Trot Landfill began accepting waste in December 2010. In addition to discounted disposal rates, Washington County receives a host fee based on a tiered structure, providing considerable economic benefits to residents.
“We appreciate all of our partners and community members who joined us to mark this milestone,” said Advanced Disposal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charlie Appleby. “Our responsibility for preserving the environment is always our top priority. We look forward to being active participants in Washington and Mobile counties and continuing to leave the world a little cleaner than we found it.”
Advanced Disposal was awarded a contract in January 2007 following a competitive bid process to permit, construct and operate a MSW landfill on an approved site in Washington County. During the assessment process, the company and its regulatory partners discovered a colony of gopher tortoises on the 300-acre landfill site.
In August, Advanced Disposal filmed the relocation process and created a documentary-style film titled “Relocating the Gopher Tortoise at Turkey Trot Landfill” in an effort to bring awareness to the federally-protected species. The film can be viewed on the company’s homepage at www.AdvancedDisposal.com.
The landfill, as well as all waste disposal cells, are built to meet or exceed the specifications of Subtitle D of the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which include:
- A bottom liner (high-density polyethylene, 60 mil, along with a 24-inch clay liner)
- Leachate collections system (leachate is any liquid that comes into contact with the refuse)
- Storm-water drainage system
- Methane-gas collection system
- Daily cover and capping
- Groundwater, surface water, and methane monitoring systems
Advanced Disposal operates a total of 11 landfills companywide, four of which are MSW landfills. Each company-operated landfill has a strong record of compliance with all governmental and environmental regulations.

Advanced Disposal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charlie Appleby (holding scissors) officially commemorated the opening of the company’s 11th landfill, Turkey Trot Landfill. Joining him are Advanced Disposal board members, city and county leaders, partners and community members.

Turkey Trot Landfill, located in Washington County, was the setting for a springtime luncheon to celebrate the official opening of Advanced Disposal’s fourth MSW landfill.
