The recycling program is optional at an additional cost. If you would like to sign up for recycling service, please fill out the information below and an Advanced Disposal Customer Care representative will contact you to confirm service start and arrange payment.
Guidelines for Curbside Garbage Service


Garbage Collection

  • Residents will continue to use your Courville container.
  • Garbage must be placed curbside prior to 7 a.m. on your scheduled day of collection.
  • All garbage must be bagged and placed in the container.
  • Place container within 4 feet of the curb with handle facing toward the residential unit and away from the street.
  • Place container at least 3 feet away from all other objects such as mailbox, car, recycling container, etc.
  • Items NOT accepted:
    • Yard waste
    • Construction debris
    • Hazardous waste (paint, solvents, gardening products, etc.)
    • Car parts (engines, batteries, fuel, motor oil or fuel)
    • Home repair and cleaning products (glues, caulk, cleansers, polishes)
    • Large glass panes
    • Large tree branches or stumps
    • Batteries
    • Fluorescent light bulbs
    • Tires
    • Unemptied aerosol cans
    • Compressed gas cylinders
    • Large engine parts
    • Small engines containing oils or fuels
    • Chemicals
    • Stumps
    • Ammunition of any kind
    • Dead animals larger than 10 lbs.
    • Firearms


Bulk Waste Collection
The bulk collection days scheduled by the City of Detroit for June are canceled. Those dates are being changed to the bi-weekly collection provided by Advanced Disposal. NOTE: This information replaces the 2014 bulk dates you received from the City of Detroit.

  • Bulk waste must be placed curbside prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.
  • Residents are permitted up to 1 cubic yard of bulk waste per pickup (1 cubic yard is the approximate size of a sofa or a large appliance such as a washing machine or refrigerator).
  • Items accepted for pickup include the following which would otherwise not fit within an empty container:
    • Furniture
    • Mattresses
    • White Goods/Appliances
    • Carpet
  • Items NOT accepted:
    • Construction and debris material
    • Hazardous waste
    • Other unacceptable waste materials
  • Additional info: Prior to disposal, all liquids, food, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s), and any unacceptable waste be removed from bulk waste and appliances.


Yard Waste Collection
Yard waste will be collected every other week on your scheduled collection day. Yard waste collection begins April 1 and ends on Friday the second full week in December.  

  • Yard waste must be placed curbside prior to 7 a.m. on your scheduled day of collection.
  • Yard waste must be bagged in biodegradable bags or bundled – NO PLASTIC BAGS.
  • Yard waste must be no larger than 4' in length and 2" in diameter.
  • Items accepted for pickup include:
    • Vegetative matter resulting from landscaping maintenance
    • Leaves
    • Grass clippings
    • Tree branches and twigs (bundled)
  • Items NOT accepted:
    • Garbage
    • Large tree debris
    • Stumps
  • Christmas tree pickup is the first two weeks in January.
    • Christmas trees must not contain any decorations or materials
      made of nonorganic material.



OPTIONAL RECYCLING COLLECTION
The City will now offer curbside recycling for all residents who request the service.

Households That Have Curbside Recycling
Advanced Disposal will collect recycling every week on your scheduled collection day.

Households That Don’t Have Curbside Recycling
Curbside recycling will be available this fall for those without recycling now.

To take part, residents will need to go online to AdvancedDisposal.com/DetroitResidential, or call (844) 2-DETROIT (233-8764) to request a 64-gallon recycling container. There is a one-time fee of $25 for the container. Residents will receive additional recycling information in the mail.

  • Recyclables must be placed curbside prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.
  • Place all recyclables in the provided container for single stream collection – no sorting is necessary.
  • Place container within 4 feet of the curb with handle facing toward the residential unit and away from the street.
  • Place container at least 3 feet away from all other objects such as mailbox, car, garbage container, etc.
  • Items accepted for recycling pickup include:
    • Glass bottles and jars
    • Aluminum cans and foil
    • Steel and bi-metal cans and containers
    • Scrap metal not exceeding 3’ in any dimension
    • Plastic materials made from PET and HDPE (Plastics #1 through #7)
    • Corrugated paper
    • Newspaper

REWARDS FOR RECYCLING
All participants have the option to register online for the Rewards for Recycling incentive program. The incentive program offers discounts and
coupons from your favorite local businesses!

Container Replacement and Repair instructions
This is a $20 charge for replacement of container. For questions about container replacement or repair, please call Customer Care at (844) 2-DETROIT (233-8764). 


Illegal Dumping

The DPW Solid Waste Division assists in clearing away this type of blight in our neighborhoods. Your help in identifying illegal dumpers and dumping will expedite this kind of cleanup. To report illegal dumping in Detroit call: Environmental Enforcement (313) 876-0964

Please provide:
Time, date and location of occurrence.
Description of the vehicle and license number if possible.

Routes will be pushed back by one day following a holiday
For example, if Christmas Day is Thursday and your normal service day is Thursday, you will be serviced on Friday. Customers who are normally serviced on Friday of that week will be serviced on Saturday.
