Advanced Disposal Gives 19-Ton, Holiday Gift to Local College
Florida State College at Jacksonville Heavy Truck Program Receives Solid Waste Collection Truck
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.,
Dec 01, 2010

Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. representatives today donated a rear-load solid waste collection truck to Florida Coast Career Tech, a division of Florida State College at Jacksonville, Heavy Truck and Diesel Technology program. The gift comes in time for the holidays and will provide much needed hydraulic and diesel training to students and potential Advanced Disposal employees.

“If any of our Heavy Truck and Diesel Technology instructors or students ever had a rear-load solid waste collection truck on their holiday wish-list, this is a beyond-belief dream-come-true,” said Florida State College at Jacksonville President Dr. Steven Wallace. “The educational value of this truck from Advanced Disposal will grow with each passing term. We are extremely grateful to Chairman and CEO Charlie Appleby and Advanced Disposal for their generosity of the equipment donation and the expertise of Charles Carroll, their director of maintenance, for his contribution to the curriculum.”

Appleby officially turned the keys over to Dr. Wallace in a lunchtime ceremony today at the Heavy Truck Lab at Florida State College at Jacksonville Downtown Campus.

The 32-yard rear-load truck is a 2000 MACK MR688S with a McNeilus body that serviced residential waste collection routes in Jacksonville. The truck logged 129,519 miles servicing 2.2 million homes before getting a comprehensive makeover for teaching purposes. This $118,000 donation will make it possible for students in the program to learn hydraulics systems, a need that was unmet until this truck entered the Florida Coast Career Tech fleet.

“We partnered with the First Coast Career Tech to provide a much needed educational tool for students, especially in the case of a garbage truck’s hydraulic and diesel engine components,” said Appleby. “With this donation, we are helping to train future Advanced Disposal and trucking industry technicians for the safest fleet possible.”

Advanced Disposal’s Corporate Director of Maintenance, Charles Carroll, is involved with the Heavy Truck and Diesel Technology program and will be helping develop the curriculum for the Preventative Maintenance Program focused around this truck.

This program will be designed for the Automotive Service Excellence certification exam T8 for Preventative Maintenance. In the future, Advanced Disposal will send its employees to be trained at the First Coast Career Tech in order to achieve this certification.

Other key partners who helped make this donation possible include Nextran Truck Center, McNeilus, Barker Products, Ben’s Paint Supply, Hill Tire Co., Bridgestone Tire Company and M & M Signs & Graphics.
