WASTE COLLECTION & RECYCLING GUIDELINES FOR Cary, IL (Village of)

Guidelines for Curbside Garbage Service

Refuse, Recycling & Yard Waste Program

The refuse, recycling and yard waste collection program in the Village of Cary includes both refuse and recycling cart rental and bag disposal options.

Refuse bags set out in a metal or plastic container for collection will not be collected.

Program Options & Quarterly Rate

All options below include a 65-gallon recycling cart, and unlimited yard waste collection.

  • One 95-Gallon Refuse Cart - $59.07 per quarter 
  • One 35-Gallon Refuse Cart - $49.68 per quarter
  • Pay By The Bag Service - $20.76 per quarter
  • Refuse / Overage Bag - $3.08 per bag

Curbside garbage service

  • Pickup once per week.
  • Garbage must be placed curbside the night before collection day, or prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.
  • Carts must be placed within four (4) feet of the curb.
  • Items NOT accepted for pickup include: aerosol paints and pesticides, antifreeze, cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, drain cleaner, fungicides, furniture strippers, gasoline, flammable liquids, insecticides, lawn chemicals, mercury, metal polishes, oils, oil-based paints, old medications, paint remover, pool chemicals, solvents, weed killers and radioactive materials or liquids of any kind.

Curbside recycling service

Please be sure to rinse and clean all containers.  Carts that are contaminated with refuse or contain improper materials will be tagged and not collected until the following week.

  • Pickup once per week.
  • Recyclables must be placed curbside the night before, or prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.
  • Carts must be placed within four (4) feet of the curb.

Glass and metal

  • Aluminum cans
  • Steel cans and tins
  • Metal cans
  • Tin cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Foil and foil trays
  • Glass bottles & jars (clear, green and brown)

Plastics (i.e. pop bottles, milk jugs)

  • As well as containers labeled PET#1, HDPE #2 through #7

Paper Products

  • Newspaper
  • Junk mail
  • Chip board (cereal boxes)
  • Mixed paper (white or colored)
  • Office Paper
  • Magazines
  • Telephone books
  • Cardboard

Cardboard

  • Cardboard boxes must be broken down, flattened and cut into a manageable size (24” x 24”).
  • Cardboard may be placed alongside of the recycling cart if unable to place inside.

Some helpful hints to remember

  • Please place ONLY approved items in the recycling cart
  • Cut corrugated cardboard into 24” x 24” pieces
  • Do not place recyclable materials in plastic bags
  • All recyclable materials should be rinsed free of food with caps/lids removed.

Yard waste collection

Advanced Disposal will provide unlimited yard waste collection to all eligible households during the yard waste season, including leaves.  Advanced Disposal will collect an unlimited amount of properly prepared yard waste in a brown biodegradable kraft paper bags placed at the curb.  The yard waste collection program runs each year starting the first Monday of April, and running until the last Friday in November.

  • Pickup once per week.
  • Yard waste must be placed curbside the night before collection day, or prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.

In order to be collected, yard waste must be placed in:

  • A 33-gallon kraft biodegradable brown bag
  • Yard waste that cannot fit in a kraft brown bag may be bundled and must be securely tied using biodegradable cord, string, rope or twine and may not exceed 50 pounds in weight, two (2) feet in diameter, and four (4) feet in length
  • 95-gallon yard waste cart is available for lease, contact Advanced Disposal at (847) 272-4145

The biodegradable kraft bags can be purchased at any location.

Annual Spring Clean-up Day

Residents will have one Spring Clean-up day each year, where an unlimited amount of properly placed refuse on the curb will be picked up at no cost.

The items NOT INCLUDED in the Spring Clean-up Day are: Tires, sod, rocks, dirt, yard or landscape waste, automotive or marine batteries, hazardous materials, liquids of any kind, electronics and other similarly related items.  All refuse must be containerized in bags or cans, and individual bags, cans or bulk items may not weigh more than 50 pounds.  No loose refuse will be collected.

Christmas trees

Christmas trees will be collected separately on any Friday during the entire month of January at no additional cost. Wreaths and Christmas trees should be free of all lights, garland, tinsel, and decorations in order to be composted.

Bulk waste service

  • Residents will be allowed to dispose of one (1) free bulk item per week - no prepaid blue bag required. Blue bags will be needed only for additional bulk items. 
  • Bulk waste must be placed curbside the night before, or prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.

Construction Debris

Up to 2 cubic yards of construction debris will be collected at no additional cost on your regular collection day.  The debris must weigh no more than 50 pounds.  Construction debris should be placed inside the refuse cart or bundled; no loose debris will be collected.  Construction debris in excess of 2 cubic yards will be picked up by appointment only, call Advanced directly at (847) 272-4145 to schedule a pick up and payment.

White Goods / Appliances

To schedule a bulk item or white good/appliance collection please call Advanced Disposal at (847) 272-4145 at least one day prior to your scheduled collection day.  Bulk items and white goods/appliances will be collected on your normal collection day. There is a $30.00 per item fee that will be billed on your next quarterly billing.

E-waste collection

Effective January 1, 2012, Advanced Disposal was no longer be permitted by law to collect electronic waste from all residential and commercial locations. Under the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, no person may knowingly cause or allow the mixing of any of the following items with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill:

  • Cable receivers
  • Computers and monitors
  • Digital converter boxes
  • Digital video disc player and recorders
  • Electronic keyboards
  • Electronic mice
  • Fax machines
  • Portable digital music players
  • Printers
  • Satellite receivers
  • Scanners
  • Small scale servers
  • Televisions
  • Video cassette recorders
  • Video game consoles
Residents can recycle electronics free of charge at the Village of Cary Public Works Department located at: 454 Cary Woods Circle.

Missed Collection

Missed collection should be reported to Advanced Disposal at (847) 272-4145 by 11 a.m. the day following your collection day in order to receive service the same week.  Prior to contacting Advanced Disposal, please make sure that collection of refuse and recycling has occurred on your block. Please remember refuse, recycling and yard waste are collected separately, and can occur at different times of the day.  Also, please check to see if your missed material has been tagged with the reason why it had not been collected.

Tagged Material

Tagged material will not be collected until the following week and must be pulled back from the curb. 

Cart Maintenance

Advanced Disposal owns and is responsible for replacing broken carts.  If your refuse or recycling cart is damaged, please contact Advanced Disposal at (847) 272-4145 to arrange for a repair or replacement. * * Cleaning of the cart is the customer's responsibility.

Holiday Schedule

There will be no pickup on the following holidays:
New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

Routes will be pushed back by one day following a holiday
For example, if Christmas Day is Tuesday and your normal service day is Wednesday, you will be serviced on Thursday. Customers who are normally serviced on Friday of that week will be serviced on Saturday.
