Additional carts are available at the cost of $2.04 per month.
· Residents opting for a 95 gallon refuse cart can place out the following items each week for no additional charge:
o one (1) bulk item
o Up to 1 yd. of building material
o Up to 4 rolls of carpet
o Up to 4 extra bags of refuse
· Residents opting for a 35 gallon or 65 gallon refuse cart can place out one (1) bulk item each week for no additional charge. (Note: This does not include extra bags of household waste.
· Additional bulk items (50 lb. limit) and bags of refuse (waste containers or generic plastic bags no larger than 32 gallons in size (50 lb. limit), will require a prepaid disposal sticker.
Bulk Items
Bulk items will be collected on the same day as your regular garbage service. Prepaid disposal stickers may be required for these items depending on the level of refuse service you are subscribed to (See Garbage Section above):
· Bundles of debris such as carpeting and wood should tied in rolls or bundles no larger than four feet in length, 24 inches in diameter and weigh no more than 50 pounds. One prepaid disposal sticker is required on each roll or bundle.
· Furniture and other items too large for your cart or can be placed out with one prepaid disposal sticker.
Items NOT accepted for regular collection include white goods and electronics, tires, pesticides, antifreeze, cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, old medications, mercury, weed killer, car batteries, and gasoline.
Recycling Service
•Curbside recycling service only.
•Pickup once per week in provided 65-gallon cart or 95-gallon cart provided by Advanced Disposal.
•Place curbside by 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
•Customers who subscribe to backdoor service must have provided recycling bins at the curbside.
•All other customers must place carts within four (4) feet from the curb.

Yard Waste/Organics Service
Select food scraps can now be mixed in with your yard waste!
• Place acceptable food scraps directly into your cart, Kraft bag or 32-gallon can, either loose or in a brown Kraft bag, layered with yard trimmings. (It is recommended that residents use subscription carts or covered cans to recycle food scraps to control moisture and odors.)
• Line your can or cart with a Kraft bag to control moisture.
Acceptable Items
• Fruits & Vegetables (cooked or raw) including unpainted holiday pumpkins
• Dairy & eggs including egg shells—but no liquids!
• Breads, grains, pasta and cereal (cooked or raw, non-meat sauce okay)
• Coffee grounds & filters, Teabags
• Food-soiled paper bags, newspaper, paper towels, pizza boxes and uncoated paper plates
Unacceptable Items
• No meat, poultry or seafood
• No bones or seafood shells
• No fats, grease or oil
• No liquids
• No pet waste or litter
• No packaging
• No service ware (even if marked compostable)
• No plastics, Styrofoam, glass, metal, diapers or other garbage
Residents have the choice of selecting one of two options for yard waste/organics collection:
Option 1 = Volume-Based Yard Waste/Organics Program (sticker)
· Collection is once per week on your normal refuse pick up day from April 1st – November 30th each year.
· Organics must be in Kraft paper bags or 32-gallon cans not exceeding 50 pounds in weight. Brush must be tied in bundles using biodegradable cord, string, rope or twine not exceeding fifty pounds in weight, two feet in diameter and four feet in length.
· Each can or bag must have a prepaid disposal sticker attached in order to be collected.
Option 2 - Optional Cart-based Subscription Yard Waste/Organics Service
Residents can subscribe to seasonal, unlimited collection service with a 35- gallon or 65-gallon wheeled cart. Residents are billed annually for this program.
· Collection is once per week on your normal refuse pick up day from April 1st – November 30th and every other week from December – March. (Actual service day during the winter months TBD at a later date.)
· No prepaid disposal stickers are required under this program. Extra yard waste/organics that do not fit inside of the cart can be placed in Kraft paper bags or 32-gallon cans not exceeding 50 pounds in weight.
Prepaid Disposal Stickers
Prepaid disposal stickers are good for both extra refuse, bulk items and yard waste.
Annual Amnesty Day
· Once a year, residents will be allowed to bring an unlimited amount of regular household refuse to one of two drop-off locations.
· Does not include the disposal of items such as yard waste, construction/demolition debris, rocks, sand, hazardous waste, electronics, tires, etc…. and would be restricted to waste generated from the customers household.
· Proof of residency required
Specific dates and locations will be determined by the Village and publicized at a later date.
Free Trash Drop Off
- Residents will be allowed to dispose of regular household refuse (i.e., basement or garage clean ups) free of charge at Advanced Disposal’s Northbrook Transfer Station, 2800 Shermer Road, free of charge between the hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm.
- Refuse is restricted to waste generated from the customer’s household. Unacceptable items include yard waste, construction/demolition debris, rocks, sand, hazardous waste, electronics, tires, etc….
- A roll-off dumpster with signage will be provided in our parking lot for residents to use in order to safely dispose of items. Residents are required to check in at the office prior to disposing of materials to show ID for proof of residency.
Electronics Collection
· Residents may recycle electronics free of charge at the Northbrook Public Works Department. Visit the Village of Northbrook website at www.northbrook.il.us for specific hours of operation.
