Guidelines for Curbside Garbage Service

Yard Waste collection begins  Monday, June 3, for  “B” week Customers.  

Yard Waste collection begins Monday, June 10, for “A” week Customers.  

1.       Yard waste must be bagged in biodegradable bags or bundles. We cannot accept plastic bags.

2.       Cut and tie 2” diameter brush no longer than 4’ in length in a bundle small enough for one person to pick up.

3.       Keep yard waste and bulk items three feet away from trash and recycling carts.

4.       Keep yard waste and bulk items in separate piles. When they are mixed together, we cannot pick up.

Curbside Garbage Service:

·         COLLECTION SCHEDULE - Pickup is once a week

o   Garbage must be placed curbside the night before collection day, or prior to 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.

·         CART PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

o   Collection is performed with automated side-load trucks (driver stays in truck to operate)

o   Important that the cart i away rom other objects!  Place container at least 3 feet away from all other objects such as mailbox, car, recycling cart, etc.

o   Place container within 4 feet of the curb with handle facing toward the residential unit and away from the street.

o   Please place cart in front of all other waste to ensure access by automated collection vehicles.

·         "GARBAGE" means all kitchen and table food waste, animal or vegetative waste that is attendant with or results from the storage, preparation, cooking or handling of food materials.

o   All garbage should be bagged and placed in the provided 95-gallon cart (container).

o   Garbage outside the cart will not be collected

§  Customer should contact the City to sign up for an extra cart, or

§  Customer should sign up for recycling if not recycling already

o   ADS has the right to refuse to collect any Unacceptable Waste, and is not required to inspect the contents of each Cart to determine whether any Unacceptable Waste is deposited in a Cart.


·         ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED: hazardous waste, paint, tires, paint solvents, unemptied aerosol cans, compressed gas cylinders, large engine parts, small engines, container oils or fuels, chemicals, large glass panes, large tree debris, stumps, ammunition of any kind, dead animals larger than 10 lbs, and firearms.


Curbside Recycling Service:  Optional

The City of Detroit is collecting recycling materials placed in the designated container at the curb every other week. The recycling program is voluntary, and residents must sign up. The program is open to ALL residents residing in a single family home or in a house with up to 4 units, including those who did not previously recycle.

·         "RECYCLABLE" ITEMS ACCEPTED for pickup include: glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans and foil, steel and bi-metal cans and containers, scrap metal not exceeding 3’ in any dimension, plastic materials made from PET and HDPE (list as Plastics #1 and #2), corrugated paper, newspaper.

o   All recyclables should be placed in the provided 64-gallon cart (container).

o   Recycling outside the cart will not be collected

Routes will be pushed back by one day following a holiday
For example, if Christmas Day is Tuesday and your normal service day is Wednesday, you will be serviced on Thursday. Customers who are normally serviced on Friday of that week will be serviced on Saturday.
