Though the freedom, justice and sacrifice they represent will live forever, all U.S. flags eventually reach the end of their useful lives. Advanced Disposal is proud to honor our American Flag with the Annual Flag Retirement Program – a free service to the communities we serve. Each year, from June 1 until September 11, all Advanced Disposal locations collect old, worn, torn and faded American flags for retirement in the proper, dignified manner outlined by the United States Flag Code.

For the 2016 program, Advanced Disposal was honored to retire more than 4,600 American flags – each with its own story, each standing proud for this great nation we are fortunate to call home. In 2017, we surpassed that record and collected a total of 5,060 flags!

“Respectfully retiring the American flag is a great way to show our appreciation of the ‘stars and stripes’ and all it stands for,” says Advanced Disposal CEO Richard Burke. “We’re proud to be an American company and honored to offer this service to our customers and the communities we serve. I want to thank everyone who participated, as well as the team members that made it possible.”

It is with great pride that Advanced Disposal provide this service and properly retire American flags that have reached the end of their useful lives. Bring your flag to Advanced Disposal (during regular business hours), and we will respectfully retire it as stipulated in the time-honored code. To find your local Advanced Disposal facility and hours, visit:, and enter your zip code.

If you are retiring more than one flag, we ask that you please separate nylon flags from cotton flags to ensure they are sent for proper disposal. We partner with American Flags Express Inc. for recycling of nylon flags and the American Legion for cotton.
